When Your Best Isn’t Good Enough
“Sometimes your best isn’t good enough.” So said The Grasshopper in an unscripted moment.
Whether in sports, business, or your personal life, the best you can do is often bested by someone or something else.
The undefeated “best” is reality. It always does its best whether we like it or not.
Reality can make us grieve even though we’ve done our level best.
If you’ve given your best, you can celebrate or lament the results, but you can’t control them.
The most unproductive thing you can do is beat yourself up after giving your best and losing. “I didn’t try hard enough,” “I didn’t pray enough,” ”I wasn’t good enough” are just some of the judgements we burden ourselves with even though we’ve done our best.
To use a sports maxim, If you leave it all on the field, that’s all you can humanly do.
“If only” is the revisionist phrase that will cause our pain to remain when we judge our best with hindsight.
If you’ve done your best, give guilt a rest. There’ll be enough pain without it.
I remember when my step father died. My mother’s sister asked her, after the funeral, if she was going to be alright that night. She took a deep breath and said, “I know I did everything humanly possible for him in his time of need, so I’ll be able to lay my head down tonight.”
When your best isn’t good enough, give yourself a pass. It’s the best you can do when reality kicks you in the ass.
All the best,
John
