Let It Out
Have you ever been given the advice to just “let it out”? It’s usually a petition to bare your soul or unburden yourself of something that’s troubling you.
The usual response to that request is giving a barrage of complaints about how you’re feeling. That won’t solve your problem.
Keeping it in is not great advice either. That leads to implosion, which just speeds up your erosion.
Here’s a bit of wisdom I received from The Grasshopper: “You have to let it all in before you can let it all out.”
To me, that means not to block the feelings that want to have their say. We, as a matter of course, attempt to chase them away. The downside of that strategy is they’re very patient and they’ll be back another day. Let them in and have tea.
Entertaining your feelings gives them carte blanche to express themselves. It takes the wind out of their sails when you give them an open forum. Now you have a more complete sense of the feelings you need to let out.
If you don’t let them all in, you’ll have stragglers when you attempt to let them all out.
There are three people you don’t want to lie to: your doctor, your lawyer, and yourself.
By denying your feelings, you just prolong the agony they foment. Better to let them have the floor. That way you’ll have a better chance of showing them all the door.
