Which Half Of The Cup Do You Drink Out Of?

It’s a broad generalization, but, for me, people fall into one of two categories: half empty or half full. There doesn’t seem to be any middle ground.

It’s sort of like a personality typing system I use to access what angle to approach people from. It’s a way of cutting through layers of facade to reach them much quicker.

From my experience, most people fall into the half empty category. There’s some degree of “woe is me” in their personality.

Half full folks entertain possibilities more readily and are easier to help. They don’t have layers of defenses you have to negotiate to guide them towards a different fate.

The difference between the two is focus. Namely, what they focus on.

“Half emptys” seem to negate or put into a distant corner anything that’s uplifting. Even when presented with some positive possibilities, they find a dark cloud of disaster. For example: What would you do if you won the giant lottery jackpot? “Oh my god, I’d have to pay a ton of it in taxes and my relatives would come out of the woodwork looking for a handout.”

They pooh-pooh good news and quickly turn it into the blues.

“Half fullers” see more possibilities than liabilities and can be guided much quicker towards a solution.

So if you’re half empty, shifting your focus is your homework assignment. Find out what’s right in your life and give it some more light. Look up the word “grateful” in the dictionary and let it start defining your experience.

You can even look at it from a half empty angle and benefit. Imagine what it would be like if something you’re grateful for suddenly disappeared from your life. This angst will head you in the direction of thanks: thankful for what’s filling up your cup.

All the best,

John
