Mythical Legends

One day I was in the kitchen watching a cable news show and they were covering a speech by a well-known New York politician. After watching this fellow for a few minutes, I said something to the effect of “this person just can’t get enough of himself.” My son, who was in the room, laid a a line on me that was profound and funny. He said, “Are you saying this guy is his own plus one?”

We all know people who are the hero of their own stories because they’re the star of every story they tell.

What does that tell us about them, and, just as importantly, about us?

We all want to be heroes at some level.

We may not be as bombastic as the aforementioned politician but we do have a desire to be a legend in our own myth.

Whether it’s to be respected, loved, looked up to, revered, celebrated, or something else, there’s a part of us we want people to notice. I’m sure as selfless as Mother Teresa was, she wanted people to know about her deeds.

Some people, like Mother Teresa, have earned their way into the spotlight, but many are shining a light on themselves because their own light is so deeply dimmed.

We all have something in common – a light to shine on the world. But many of us diffuse our light and others can’t see because we keep most of it shining on me.

When we finally figure out that were not the story we’ve been spotlighting, that’s an inflection point in our life. That’s when our own light begins to shine bright.

When we retire our myth, we no longer need the bright lights on us because our inner light falls on everyone we see, and they reflect it back on us. That’s when we realize I only need to be me.

All the best,

John
