Facts Don’t Care About Feelings
I heard a YouTuber say the following: “Facts don’t care about feelings.” It struck a chord with me.
For me, facts and reality are inseparable twins. There’s no opposing wind to either of them, only windbags trying to spin.
I saw a posting by actor Keanu Reeves on“Twitter.” He asked something to the effect of “Why do people overlook the facts when they’re staring them right in the face?”
My answer was, “Ask any teacher having a parent/teacher conference and addressing a student’s behavior.” “Not my son (daughter)” is the fact dodging response.
“Spin” is an attempt to mitigate the facts. “This doesn’t mean that” is the essence of the argument.
Nowhere is this more present than in politics. No wonder people have such a low opinion of our political representatives.
Back in the day when I used to do radio talk shows, I had occasion to interview many political candidates. Their inability or unwillingness to answer a straight forward question was astounding. After many of those interviews I wanted to wash.
But this isn’t a rant against willfully blind parents or acrobatic politicians. It’s about facts and feelings. Not only is it accurate to say, “Facts don’t care about feelings.” It’s just as true to say, “Feelings don’t care about facts.”
You will encounter less opposition in life when you stop labeling your opinions (feelings) as facts.
It’s easy enough to separate the two. A fact has no opposite; opinions do.
If you’re having a friendly chin wag with a bestie, let your opinions fly. But if you’re having a more meaty conversation, make sure there’s some meat on the bone, or you’ll be left there alone holding a bag of wind.
All the best,
John
