The Way We Weren’t

People of a certain age will remember a movie starring Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford called, “The Way We Were.” It was a love story about an on and off again relationship over the years due to, among other things, differing positions on social and political issues.

Who can’t remember an old flame who we were head over heels in love with, but had we married, one of us would probably be in jail. The way we were is not the way we are.

We’ve all been asked the perfunctory question, “How are you?”countless times. Our robotic answer is something on the order of “fine.” Years ago, I came up with another response. I said, “I’m evolving.”

It occurred to me that if you’re not evolving, you’re probably revolving, just like you’d be if you were stuck in a revolving door.

Have you ever gone to a class reunion? There’s no better forum to witness evolving and revolving. There you’ll find lots of people wearing the fashionable clothes of the days of yore with hairstyles to match. You wouldn’t even wear that outfit on Halloween, and you’ve burned all the pictures of you with that hairdo.

But this is more than about style, it’s about mindsets.

We’ve garnered lots of opinions over the years on just about everything. Many of those opinions were inherited and not even originally ours. We got them by accident or osmosis.

Some of those opinions have become strong beliefs. But upon inspection, we find some of them aren’t working for us. That puts us at the crossroads between “were and weren’t.”

It takes some recognition to realize the way we were isn’t how we feel now. Do we stick to our guns or do we head off in a new direction that brings us more peace?

Only you can decide. Because if you don’t, it’s “Back To The Future” for you, where you’ll be stuck like glue to something old that’s not working for you.

All the best,

John
