Sustainable Or Desirable?

This observation is about choices between courses of action.

Is the life you’re living sustainable or desirable?

It may be both, but odds are it’s not.

Seems to me that sustainable is the choice we make most often. That translates into maintaining the status quo, which is often mundane. “It is what it is” is our refrain.

Desirable seems outside our reach. Or that’s, to ourselves, what we preach.

Reminds me of a story I’ve told many times . . . Back in the 80s, I dismissed the idea of taking a family vacation to Disney World. It was too expensive and not in the budget was my rationale. It was desirable but not attainable.

But something urged me to go past my pooh-pooh-ing and investigate the prospect. To my surprise this five day adventure didn’t cost any more than the vacation we normally planned. It lives on in all our memories as a family treasure.

This investigation between courses of action goes well past dream vacations. You may be locked into a mindset of sustainable, but not attainable by not exploring options.

We often dismiss them in our head without doing the legwork necessary to remove us from our dread. “That can’t happen for me” is our sustained battlecry . . . until we try . . . to see what’s on the other side.

We often judge the weather by what we see outside our window. If our windowpane only shows us rain, we can only muster our “is what it is” refrain. By exploring options just a stone’s throw away can show us a brighter day.

Learn to ask yourself, “what are my options?” And then explore them. And don’t be too surprised when you find a desirable course of action.

All the best,

John
