Aims & Goals
The words “aim” and “goal,” on first blush, mean the same thing to many people. I think they’re different.
When you take aim, say with a bow and arrow, a dart, or a rifle, your intent is to hit what you’re aiming at. So an “aim” is a desire or an intent.
A goal, like in soccer or hockey, is a reward for taking precise aim.
So saying your goal is to score the goal seems redundant to me.
This is more than “nit picky” semantics. It’s a perspective on the difference between talking and doing.
Aiming is talking, either to yourself or another, about what you’re going to do. A goal is doing.
Aiming is easy; doing has a higher degree of difficulty.
A New Year’s resolution is an aim; actually losing 20 pounds is reaching the goal line.
It’s my experience that you’ll hit more of what you’re aiming at if you keep that information to yourself. Don’t tell anyone what you’re aiming to do; show them what you’ve done.
Talk is cheap; doing comes with a higher price tag. But the payoff is measurable when you score the goal. It’s harder to measure the success of an aim, especially if you announce them and continually don’t follow through.
If I’ve managed to get this concept through to you, I’ve scored a goal.
All the best,
John
