Outsider Information

I believe we’ve all heard of “insider information,” but are not as familiar with the term “outsider information.”

Outsider information is a fancy term for “rumor.”

If you want to see your fair share of outsider information, just go on to social media – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, et al – and you’ll read one bloated tick after another offering lots of grist for the rumor mill.

I see red flags anytime I see hyperbolic headlines - sensational headlines that contain phrases like, “sources close to the situation,” or “reliable sources,” or “people on the inside.”

It’s like vague advertising copy: “experts say,”studies show,” “people tell me.” What specific experts and what specific studies or people?

The rumor mill isn’t going away anytime soon, but you can isolate yourself from it, by noticing the non specific catch phrases intended to stir your passions about a rumor there’s no evidence for.

If you’re prone to rumors, you’re lazy! If you pass them on, you’re just plain stupid or prejudiced.

If you don’t make any effort to validate the information, but just pass it on as though it’s gospel truth, you still believe in the fairy who gives you money for a tooth.

Want to stay on the outside looking in? Just keep consuming and passing on information that’s “thin.”

If you truly want to get the “straight skinny”, don’t load up at the endless buffet of outsider information.

All the best,

John
