Old Steps

The Grasshopper asked this question: “If my old step isn’t my next step, what is my new step?”

We all know where the old steps lead and perhaps we’ve decided we don’t want to go there anymore. What is our next step?

One thing for sure, it has to be a new one, but which one?

This much I can guarantee: it can’t be a leap. In my experience, they have short term results. Baby steps take longer but have more lasting results.

Reminds me of a story from my radio days. Our radio station had accepted some advertising from a topless night club. As the program director, I had an immediate objection, not because of the sponsor, but because of our audience.

Our audience was populated by soccer moms and I couldn’t imagine a mom with her kids in the car continue listening to our station when a commercial came on and said, “Come to the Foxy Lady tonight and see Marilyn Melons and her exotic, topless dancing.”

Our general manager said the sponsor paid in cash and that was a good thing because all the other sponsors took 30, 60, or 90 days to pay their bill. My objection fell on deaf ears, until a radio consultant came in and, not prodded, asked the GM why he was accepting advertising that was chasing listeners away. He gave him the same answer he gave me.

The consultant recommended to run the ads but change the verbiage to be vague and not so in your face. His exact quote to the GM was, “Get a little religion.” Smaller steps so to speak. He took that advice and retained the sponsor and the listener.

Incremental is the proven way to go, but as a society, we’re weaned on a shortcut mentality and deem anything short of a leap too slow.

The old fast steps are out of step with getting results. Recognize that step-by-step will get you there quicker than all your fits and starts put together.

In a nutshell: Old steps lead to new ones when we don’t skip steps.

All the best,

John
