Doorman vs. Bouncer
Maybe it’s just my impression but I see doormen being more friendly than bouncers.
One lets you in; the other keeps you out, or throws you out.
I believe we act like both of them. There are some people or ideas we easily let in, and others we just shut the door on.
Taking it a step further, I believe we let our preferences in, and bounce anyone or anything that doesn’t line up with our prejudices.
That leads to a pretty vanilla existence. Think mundane.
I think English poet William Cowper must have had the same notion back in 1785 when he wrote the poem “The Task.” In there he left us with this gem and directive: “Variety is the spice of life, that gives it all its flavor.”
If you only have salt and pepper in your spice rack, you’re most likely trying to preserve your prejudices, and sneezing at anything outside your comfort zone.
If you find yourself closed off from the world, perhaps it’s time to unfold your arms and take the scowl off your face, and let a few more things enter your space.
Open the door more often than you do and let variety stage a friendly coup. It’ll lead to a more welcome you.
All the best,
John
