Are You A Vessel?

Everything you do comes through you. You are a vessel for whatever actions you take.

As a religious society, we have a tendency to ascribe the label “vessel” only to those that perform godlike deeds or offer us some divine inspiration, as in “He/she’s a vessel for God’s work.”

But, there are a couple of kinds of vessels: those of conditioning and those of creativity.

If whatever comes through you is counterproductive and harmful, you can bet it comes from your conditioning. Take prejudice as an example. You didn’t come out of Mom’s womb with hatred for a certain type of human being, it was conditioned along the way, and, as a result, prejudice is what you’re a vessel for. Now, that’s not very godlike.

But we’re all creative as well as conditioned. When creativity flows through you, what comes out is revered through and through. We may assign our creative creations to a higher power as in the victorious football player being interviewed after the game on what he attributes his spectacular performance to. He may say, “all credit to God” or something quite similar. He, on this day, was a vessel for great play.

So the question you may want to ask yourself is: Am I a vessel for my conditioning or creativity?

You’re actually both. But if you start to notice the variety that’s flowing through you, you can put out less of one and more of the other.

Creativity has a different feel than conditioning. Conditioning has a lot of thought and justification behind it; creativity arrives from out of the blue without any fat being chewed.

Just by noticing you’re putting out conditioning gives you the option to make a different choice as to what you’re a vessel for. Just by putting your conditioning on pause, even for a moment, creates a space for creativity to come through.

So, if you want to be more of a vessel for creativity, start noticing what’s coming out of you. When you notice, you offer yourself choices as to what comes next.

Will it be something creative or something that keeps you vexed?

All the best,

John
