Evolving Has Evolved
Dictionary Dot Com has named “demure” as the word of the year. I don’t know what their criteria is for judging, but it’s not the word I would have picked.
I would’ve picked “evolved.”
Seems the definition of “evolved”has evolved quite a bit in recent years, and is now universally used as a cover, or as an excuse for a position you’ve taken in the past.
For example, if you, once stated, “All left-handed clowns are pickpockets”and that’s now been proven to be false, you get to say, ‘I’ve evolved on that issue” without any recrimination.
You don’t ever have to say, “I was wrong about that.”
The avoidance of “my bad” is at epidemic proportions, and it’s taking its toll on peoples’ credibility.
Sadly, we now expect and accept it from our political leaders, and the practice is cascading down into our culture where no one is responsible for anything.
I believe a course in personal responsibility should be mandated in our schools. It’s the only way to keep it from going out of existence.
We’ve become a finger pointing society and that finger never seems to point in our direction. That’s bad.
If it continues, we’ll keep revolving, going round and round in circles, attempting to escape being the person holding the bag. We all say, “someone’s got to pay” but in the same breath, we utter, “It ain’t gonna be me.”
It’s my hope that we can evolve on this issue, in the true sense of the word, where a sense of responsibility is not absurd.
All the best,
John
