Procrastination
Who hasn’t procrastinated in their life? Nobody you know. It’s a matter of degree to which we all procrastinate.
The real question is: Is procrastinating consistently getting in your way? If the answer is yes, you’ve got some work to do.
The first step is to get rid of the reasons why you procrastinate. “Oh, ‘m so busy with other things” or “There’s only so many hours in a day,” or any other lame excuse you can muster. Left to your imagination, you can come up with a litany of reasons, all of which delay the chore or action at hand.
Then realize the thing you procrastinate most about is something you truly don’t want to do. It’s your responsibility to do it, but down deep you don’t want to.
For example, I hate emptying the dishwasher, especially the silverware. So I procrastinate and the dishwasher stays full while the sink piles up with dishes waiting to go into the dishwasher.
What gets me past procrastinating is deciding to do the part of the job I like the least, first!
I tackle emptying and sorting the silverware. Then, the rest of the job seems like a piece of cake.
You may be procrastinating about something more serious than my dishwasher dilemma but the solution is the same: Break down the task into pieces, and then do the hardest part first.
What you’ll discover by doing this is that it takes less time to do then it does coming up with the reasons why you can’t.
Back to me for a moment. I don’t look forward to shaving. I think that strikes a chord with most men, but I like a clean shaven look. So, one day I timed how long it takes me to shave. It’s approximately 6 minutes. But if I tallied up all the time I spent silently ranting about shaving, I would run out of time in the day and only add to my shaving delay.
Procrastinating is a learned pattern of behavior. The way to address it is the same process to change any behavior: Interrupt the pattern while it’s happening. Interrupt yourself procrastinating by noticing that you are. Just the noticing of the behavior, while it’s happening, is often enough of a wedge to get you off the procrastinating ledge and jump feet first into your project.
Also, I highly recommend you buy yourself a copy of Mel Robbins’ book “The 5 Second Rule.” She’ll help you see your procrastinating behavior clearer, and put your stall tactics in the rearview mirror.
All the best,
John
