Misery Loves Company
The Grasshopper offered this up yesterday: “Don’t let misery keep you company forever.”
The idea of “misery loves company” dates back to the Ancient Greek writers from the time of Sophocles.
The premise is there’s comfort in shared suffering. If you think about it, that concept has lived on through the centuries. Watch any rerun of the Oprah show. She introduced a group of people, mainly women, to a topic they should be upset about and got them to clap about it.
“Birds of a feather flock together” is another ancient proverb that points us in the same direction. Did you ever notice that miserable people find each other? It’s like two plumbers who don’t know one another at a huge wedding. Chances are real good they’re going to find each other.
I’m sure we’ve all been miserable from time to time, but if it’s a staple of your existence, it’s time to show it the door.
But how?
I’m not exactly sure, but I have some guesses.
- Stop hanging out with other miserable people. Find some folks whose glasses are a bit more full than yours.
- Give some reflection time to who you want to be. My guess is you won’t choose misery.
- Give up your victim story. Every time you tell it, it revivifies your wretchedness. It reminds me of what one of my teacher’s preached: “You don’t have to go to the dump to remember what garbage smells like.”
Some folks will take misery to their grave, and that’s sad. But it doesn’t have to be you. You have a choice. Choose another path, one that’s not filled with unending wrath.
All the best,
John
