Arguing
A book by Daniel Quinn entitled “Ishmael” contains the following eye-opening quote: “There is no argument to end the argument.”
There are so many things people argue about and believe they’re spouting the truth when they do. Truth be told, they’re only spinning opinions, and that woven tale goes on forever. That means someone else continues the argument after you’re gone.
Do you like to argue? Join a debating society, host a talk show, become a lawyer. Argue ’til your heart’s content. But leave that skill behind when you walk off your stage, or you’ll just engage someone’s rage whose facts aren’t as sage.
If there’s not 100 percent proof that it’s the truth, remain above the fray and avoid an unpleasant display of arguing for what you know, that just ain’t so.
If you truly want your thoughts heard, label them as opinions. An opinion is an angle of view that’s not necessarily true, but makes sense to you.
Your opinion doesn’t make someone else wrong, just different from you when it comes to a point of view.
Exchanging opinions is more like brainstorming than it is barn burning. You leave the other with their dignity intact instead of them feeling under attack.
Take a look at what you argue about and what you’ll see is no end in sight for an ongoing fight.
Is it time to throw in the towel? It is if you heed Daniel Quinn’s lament: There’s no argument to end the argument.
All the best,
John
