For Or Against?
Are you for something or against something? I’m about to make an argument that one’s easier than the other, especially on your psyche and your well-being.
One side contains tons of anger; the other, visions of grandeur. Can you guess which one is which?
Being against something sets you up for a fight. Being for something portrays the future as bright.
Both approaches can be successful, but one is more stressful.
Consider for a moment Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). When you examine their goal more closely, they’re really for driving sober. But being mad about something tickles the angry bones in our body more so than the positive spin. That’s why negative political ads work better than high ideals, cinematic works of art.
But there is a cost for being against. It may get you to act, but it may also play havoc with your digestive tract.
It’s like the person faced with a serious illness. Physicians will tell you that the person who declares they want to live versus the one who says, “I don’t want to die” has a much better chance to pull through. One is for life; the other is against death.
It’s more than semantics; there are real world applications of being for vs. being against.
I’m not suggesting you give up your cause; only asking you to take a pause and find out which approach freaks you out. Leave that approach out.
Find a way to be for your goal because being against will take its toll.
All the best,
John
