Yesterday

Paul McCartney wrote and sang a beautiful, melancholic song about yesterday. The gist of the song is a longing for time forever gone. To quote my mother, “It’s a false plea,” meaning it will never happen.

Looking back doesn’t move you forward, unless you’re searching for the step that made you step out of line, and correct it going forward.

The key to moving forward is to keep moving. Staying static keeps your progress erratic and you crave stability, so you reach back for the drug of yesterday.

But like all drugs, the effect wears off and you’re right back where you were before: Stuck.

You vow that tomorrow will be different, but vowing to act tomorrow only creates more yesterdays.

Now is the only time to outgrow your past. Regrets won’t get you there, nor will wishing things were different. “If only I had’ve done this, I wouldn’t be longing for the days I miss.” Rewriting history only drags you back in time.

The only time you can move is now. Taking steps now in any forward direction are stepping stones to a different future.

Got a question for you: What steps can you take today that lead you away from yesterday? It’s a pilgrimage worth pursuing, because longing for yesterday will be your undoing.

All the best,

John
