Loosen The Grip Of The Future

The Grasshopper once offered a fresh take on fear: “Reacting to ‘what ifs’ instead of what is.”

There’s plenty of fear circulating these days, but much of it stems from reacting to what isn’t happening rather than what is.

Fear is almost always future-focused. “What will happen if…?” becomes our default mindset. We mentally project ourselves into an imagined future, but we feel the fear now. That means even if our worst fears come true, we’ve already endured them multiple times in our minds.

While fear is natural, we can reduce its grip by anchoring ourselves in the present.

One simple way to do this is by paying attention to the moment. The modern day term is "mindfulness." Even during ordinary tasks like washing your hands, immerse yourself in the experience — the feel of the soap, the warmth of the water, the texture of the towel, the sound of the water going down the drain. The more you engage with the present, the less space fear has to grow.

Fear is a signal—one that prompts us to focus and take action. And often, the most powerful action we can take is to stay present.

There’s enough in life to keep us anxious indefinitely. But if you want to quiet the fearful dialog in your mind, pay closer attention to now, and you’ll reclaim your sense of calm by applying your mindfulness balm.

All the best,

John
