The Old Shoes Blues
You ever have one of those moments where something simple—like a walk—suddenly hits you with a deep realization? That happened to me during the pandemic.
With my health club shut down and no access to the pool, I had to find another way to move. So, I walked. I followed the same route I’d taken for years, but this time, I switched it up—I walked it in reverse. And something about that small change made everything feel… new.
That’s when it hit me.
I realized how much resistance I felt toward walking the route the “usual” way. It had this weird, heavy, past feeling, like I was stepping back into an old version of myself. And honestly? I wasn’t interested in reliving that.
It made me think about an old band that broke up, only to reunite years later. The reasons they split in the first place? Probably still lurking under the surface. If they go back to doing things the same way, odds are, history will repeat itself.
And that got me thinking: If you ever find yourself stepping back into an old part of your life—whether it’s a job, a relationship, a hobby—maybe don’t just fall into the same old rhythm. Try a different approach.
Because let’s be real: The novelty of revisiting something familiar fades fast. But if you shift your mindset—stay open, stay flexible—you might just breathe new life into it. You don’t have to change who you are, but maybe loosen up a little, like a fresh new branch instead of a stiff old one.
Old shoes are comfy, sure. But if you keep walking the same path in them, don’t be too surprised if you end up singing the same old blues.
Here’s to new ways of walking old roads.
All the best,
John
