Life’s a Vacation—So, What Are You Doing With It?
A few years ago, while I was out for a walk, I overheard two guys talking about working from home during the pandemic. One of them said, “They think working from home is a vacation. It’s no vacation.” The other guy just shrugged and said, “Life is a vacation.”
I kept walking, but that last line stuck with me: Life is a vacation.
And the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Life is like a vacation between wherever we came from and wherever we’re headed next. And just like with any vacation, we’re all in different seasons—some of us are in the exciting spring of new beginnings, others in the summer of full bloom, the fall of transition, or the winter of reflection. But no matter what season you’re in, the real question is:
What are you doing with your vacation?
I remember my fourth-grade teacher, Miss Wagner, asking us on the first day of school, “What did you do on your summer vacation?” It was a chance to reflect on whether we’d made the most of our time.
So, let me ask you—what are you doing with yours?
There’s an old Chinese saying I love: “Talk doesn’t cook rice.” In other words, thinking and talking about doing something isn’t the same as actually doing it. And that brings me to an even bigger question:
What’s your purpose?
I doubt it’s sitting around thinking about what you could do or distracting yourself with whatever keeps you from actually taking action. But that’s what so many of us do—we let diversions take over instead of doing something productive.
Maybe it’s time to turn this into a working vacation—a time to commit to something that truly matters.
Of course, only you can figure out what that is. But here’s a little exercise: Ask yourself, “What is my purpose?” Then find a quiet space, let go of the noise, and really listen. When the distractions fade, inspiration has a chance to show up.
So, what will you do with your vacation?
I’ll leave you with something I once heard from Grasshopper: "You came from nothing, you’re returning to nothing, so while you’re here… do something."
All the best,
John
