The Juice of Life
We’re all squeezing something out of life—decisions, creations, choices. But if there’s no juice in what we’re doing, it’s hard to feel satisfied.
I believe everyone has a natural gift—something they didn’t have to learn; it just comes effortlessly. Maybe you’re naturally empathetic, or a math whiz. For me, I have an auditory gift. I can hear what excites people just by listening for a few seconds. It’s my weird little superpower.
The good news? Anyone can develop this skill with a little active listening—to themselves and to others.
Listening for the Juice
Try this: The next time a friend is struggling with a decision, really listen. As they talk through their options, you’ll start to notice that one choice has more energy behind it. It might be subtle, but it’s there.
Even something as simple as picking takeout—pizza, Chinese, Mexican—has a "juicy" answer. You’ll hear that tiny shift in enthusiasm when they mention the one they really want, even if they don’t realize it yet.
Now apply that same listening to yourself. If you’re weighing a job change, for example, go beyond the pros and cons. Pay attention to how each option feels when you talk about it. That feeling is the juice.
A Real-Life Example
Years ago, my wife was offered a secretarial job at a factory. It paid better and had more benefits than her current job—on paper, it seemed like a great move. She told me about it with mild enthusiasm.
Then she mentioned something almost as an afterthought: her desk would be near the factory floor, and a little dust would drift in every time the door opened. As she said it, her energy dropped.
I asked her to imagine working there for a week—sitting at that desk, watching the dust come in every day. She didn’t even need to answer me. The juice was gone. She turned down the job.
The Bottom Line
Sometimes, a decision makes sense logically but doesn’t feel right. That’s when you need to listen to what juices you. It can be the difference between choosing something that’s merely “fine” and ending up stuck in a cage of your own making.
So, what’s got juice for you?
All the best,
John
