You’re Not Gonna Solve It In Your Head
Stuck on a problem that just won’t budge? You’ve been turning it over and over in your mind, and somehow, you keep landing on the same dead-end solutions. Frustrating, right? That’s because your brain is basically recycling old information—stuff that didn’t work before and won’t magically start working now.
Time to shake things up.
But How?
Here’s a trick that took me way too long to learn: hit pause. Be patient.
Seriously, stop thinking about it for a bit. Go do something else—wash the dishes, take a walk, mess around with a puzzle, watch some cat videos. The key is to give your brain a break.
But before you dive into your distraction of choice, set an intention. Tell your mind, Hey, work on this in the background, will ya? Then, fully focus on whatever you’re doing. That’s the patience part.
Your mind works best when it has a goal and some breathing room. I’ve come to define patience as simply “the time it takes.” And trust me, your mind needs that time—without you hovering over it, bombarding it with the same old ideas.
Once you’re done with your break, return to your predicament. See if anything new pops up.
Will this work 100% of the time? Nope. But it works often enough that it’s worth making it a habit.
Pause. Be patient. It’ll calm your mind, and in many cases produce something sublime.
