Broaden Your Horizons And Connect
Funny how the smallest things can shift your perspective. For example, have you ever tried something totally new . . . and been surprised by how much you liked it?
A few years back, I had my very first fresh fig. Yeah, I know—figs aren't exactly cutting-edge cuisine. But at my age, you don’t try new things all that often. Still, I gave it a shot—and I’ve gotta say, it was delicious.
That simple little moment got me thinking about the idea of “new.” Now, I’m not talking about new just for new’s sake—that’s never really been my thing. But sometimes, stepping outside the routine and saying “yes” to something unfamiliar can lead to something great.
Entertain this idea for a second: When we broaden our perspective, we make our tent bigger. We welcome different viewpoints. We get the chance to see the world from angles we might’ve missed. And yeah, sometimes we used to wave those perspectives away with a polite (or not-so-polite) “shoo.”
But connection? That starts with openness. Think about flowers—they bloom by opening up. Same goes for people. When you're open, you're more approachable. You're more relatable. You connect easier.
Now, staying closed off? That’s the easy route. Just keep saying “no.” But opening up? That takes a little more effort. You’ve got to move past those knee-jerk “no’s” we’ve all been taught over the years.
The word “yes” is like a key. It opens doors. And once you walk through, you find yourself on a path that leads to real connection, just by walking a mile in someone else’s shoes.
Sure, it can feel awkward at first. But with practice? You’ll find your way out of “no man’s land” . . . and into a world that’s a lot more open—where you'll make a lot more connections, yes?
All the best,
John
