The State of Flow

You won’t find the state of flow on any map. No GPS coordinates, no road signs pointing the way. But when you’re there? Oh, you know it. There’s no mistaking that feeling.

So, what is the state of flow? It’s that magical moment when you’re doing something so smoothly, so naturally, it feels like it’s just happening — without effort, without overthinking. Everything just clicks.

Athletes call it “the zone.” Artists feel it when the brush seems to move by itself. Musicians, writers, speakers — we all know that sweet spot where the thinking mind steps aside, and something bigger takes over.

Most of us stumble into it by accident. A lucky few seem to live there. Either way, when it happens — when you see someone in it, or when it happens to you — it’s something special.

I still remember the first time it happened to me. I was leading a seminar at an alcohol treatment center in Massachusetts back in the mid-80s. And somewhere during the session, something unexpected and beautiful happened: it felt like I was two feet behind myself, just watching. The words were flowing out of me — not planned, not rehearsed — just . . . happening. One part of me was speaking, the other part was in awe.

That moment didn’t last long — maybe a minute — but it was enough. Like tasting honey for the first time, I knew I wanted to find my way back.

Chances are, you’ve had a moment like that, too. Maybe so quick you missed it. Or maybe you’ve dreamed about it — dreams where you’re flying, or playing a musical instrument flawlessly that you’ve never played, or speaking a language you don’t know. That’s the feeling. That’s flow.

And here’s the best vehicle I’ve found to get back there – getting quiet. Like, really quiet. When I can slow down the mental chatter — the constant inner chit-chat — I make space for flow to show up. And when it does? Wow.

One Christmas, our seminar coordinator gifted me a calendar filled with quotes — things she said I had written. I just said, “Did I really write that?” Apparently I did.

Honestly, that’s why I keep writing. Writing is how I tap in. Every so often, something unexpected, something beautiful, just shows up. Out of nowhere. Like a gift.

Make no mistake — being in flow is like being in a trance. You don’t know how you’re doing what you’re doing, but somehow . . . it’s perfect. That’s creativity.

That’s the real magic of flow: when you create something that didn’t exist before. And the way it feels while you're doing it — there’s nothing like it.

So if you want more of that in your life — more moments of flow, more welcome surprises — find what helps you quiet your mind. Because that quiet? That’s the pathway to the state of flow – a place full of beautiful, quiet accidents.

All the best,
 John
