Beware And Be Aware
Here’s a quick thought for your day: There’s a big difference between “beware” and “be aware.”
"Beware" usually sounds the alarm — it’s a warning.
But "be aware"? That’s an invitation. It leads to insight . . . to revelation.
If you’re human, you probably don’t always listen to warnings. But a revelation? That’s hard to ignore.
“Beware” might help you dodge a pitfall. But “be aware”? That opens doors.
Perhaps you’ve never thought about this but awareness is built in. We’re born with it. It’s like pre-installed software.
But like a lot of apps on our phones — we forget it’s even there. We don’t use it to its full potential.
And yet, it’s always running — even in our sleep.
Take a mom, for example. She may snooze through thunderstorms, sirens, all of it. Ask her, “Did you hear that storm last night?” She’ll say, “What storm?”
But the moment her baby cries out in the middle of one of those storms? She’s up. Wide awake, comforting her child.
That’s awareness. That’s presence. Always on.
Now let’s take a look at “beware” for a second.
Sometimes we overuse it — like crying wolf.
Our minds can fill up with what I call a “bevy of bewares.”
These are the thoughts that stop us cold. They make us second-guess.
They keep us stuck.
But awareness can see through all of that.
Awareness knows the difference between a genuine wolf and one in sheep’s clothing. If we keep chasing costumed creatures, we’ll remain running in circles and get nowhere.
So . . . be aware of your “bewares.”
Start noticing the thoughts that push you around.
Years ago, my friend Denise posted this quote from author Eckhart Tolle:
“The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation, but the thoughts about it.”
That hit me.
Because when you start noticing your thoughts, you stop being run by them.
And in that moment, awareness steps in. It watches.
It gently says, “Hey, be aware of that one.”
Awareness breaks the cycle.
It opens your eyes to options.
It helps you choose differently.
So today, I’ll leave you with this:
Be aware and be less scared.
And remember — someone is always watching your thoughts . . .
And that someone is you.
All the best,
John
