A Magic Bullet Is The One Not Shot
You know, there’s a big difference between catching yourself before you shoot off your mouth . . . and catching yourself after.
One of my sons is a police officer, and when he was in training, they taught him something really smart: when you draw your weapon, your finger doesn’t go straight to the trigger. It rests on the trigger guard — that little barrier around the trigger — to help prevent accidents.
Kind of makes you wonder . . . do you have a trigger guard on your mouth?
Turns out, we all do. It’s called awareness.
When you use a little awareness before you open your mouth, you save yourself a whole lot of trouble — and a lot of apologies.
An old teacher of mine used to say, "Words are the caboose on the choo-choo of life." What he meant was, before you say anything, notice you have a picture forming in your mind, and a feeling about it — long before the words come out.
If we learn to notice those signals — those little warning lights — we can stop ourselves from firing off the wrong thing at the wrong time.
But like anything, it takes practice. Just like officers practice at the firing range, we’ve got to train ourselves to notice when we’re about to speak without thinking.
Because when we do . . . we react automatically . . . we end up hitting the wrong target. Hurting the wrong person. Saying the wrong thing. And then we're left trying to patch it up with a half-hearted "I'm sorry."
But once you start noticing that moment just before you speak, that’s when you discover your own personal trigger guard. That’s when you start using the real magic bullet: awareness.
And — just like real bullets — words can do damage. So a little safety training? It can save you from shooting yourself in the foot.
Be careful out there.
All the best,
John
