The Point of No Return
There are moments in life that change you—permanently. Not in a dramatic, fireworksy kind of way, but quietly and deeply. One of those moments is when you first experience presence.
It's like this: if you see a Ferrari—it's exciting, beautiful, flashy. Then you see a sunrise over Sedona. That . . . that takes your breath away. It hits differently. You suddenly realize there's a deeper beauty out there, and something inside of you shifts. Once you feel that kind of awe, the man-made stuff doesn’t quite measure up anymore. It’s like your internal scale for what matters just got recalibrated.
There’s this old quote from the Chinese philosopher Yang Chu. He basically said: “All the riches, the sounds, the colors—eventually they wear you out. They stop feeding your soul.” Presence does the opposite: It feeds something deeper.
Let me give you an example. When I was younger, wedding receptions were simple—a gathering at a firehouse with a keg of beer, aluminum trays of food, great memories. Then one day, I attended a wedding reception at a private country club. My idea of what a wedding reception could be changed forever. That’s kind of what presence does. Once you experience it, you can’t go back to how things were.
Presence isn’t about doing anything special. It’s about being you. Not the version of you that’s built on job titles or material things—but the quiet, grounded you. The real one. The one connected to everything.
If you don’t know presence, you’ll chase happiness with “when-I” statements: “When I get the job, the house, the body . . . then I’ll be happy.” But that’s like saying, “When I get skinny, then I’ll start eating healthy.” It’s backwards.
The good news? Presence is always available. Right now. For anyone. You just have to quiet the noise in your head. Whether it’s meditation, yoga, tai chi—whatever helps you get still, use it. The moment presence touches you, you’ll know it. And that version of you—the new one—won’t ever want to go back.
All the best,
John
