Life Is An Event

Ever notice that when life begins we celebrate it as a “blessed event”? But after that, many folks celebrate far fewer events.

If you're anything like me, you "get up" for certain occasions: vacations, out to a special dinner, a concert, birthday party, wedding, movie, class reunion, anniversaries and the like. We just don’t seem to treat the rest of the time in between as events.

After all, what we are talking about is a mindset. We bring a certain mindset to an event. My question is: Can we make more things into events?

For example, is brewing your first cup of tea or coffee a routine or an event? My suggestion is if you make it into an event, you'll enjoy your morning brew even more.

The goal is to make your life more eventful so there is a lot more of it to enjoy.

It just takes a minor shift of focus to make the seemingly mundane come to life - just make it an event.

Another word for event is “opportunity.” Even a water cooler conversation can be an opportunity to connect . . . like that Saturday morning when I was in line at the deli. I could’ve just stood there, half-awake, scrolling on my phone, waiting for my Swiss cheese. But instead, I turned to the woman next to me and said something more than, “Nice weather.”

This person was interesting, cordial, and full of life. We chatted about a bevy of topics: children, aging parents, dogs, and deli meats. It could have just been me talking to myself in my head, tapping my foot and waiting for my turn, but I made the effort to turn this experience into an event. I’m glad I did.

That five-minute exchange? It was joyful moment between two people who’ll probably never meet again—but who both "got up" for an event in the deli line.

Making everyday activities into events is a practice worth practicing, and, dare I say, makes life more eventful.

All the best,

John
