Your Hidden Agenda
You ever notice how sometimes, what’s happening on the surface doesn’t quite match what’s going on below decks? And when that happens, we’re usually not being honest. And here’s the thing: surface-level honesty can only take you so far. Eventually, the truth finds a way out.
Let me quote one of my favorite TV characters—fake doctor, real truth-teller—Gregory House. He said, “Everybody lies.”
And he was right.A hidden agenda? That’s a big lie. Not just the kind you tell someone else—it’s the kind you tell yourself.
We come up with all sorts of reasons to keep those agendas tucked away. Maybe we’re scared. Maybe we don’t want to rock the boat. But the endgame is always the same: eventually, we get exposed.
Ask any divorce lawyer—they’ll tell you. When someone’s caught cheating, their first response is usually denial. Then come more lies. Then more. Until the truth has nowhere left to hide.
Dr. Dave Dobson—he had a great metaphor for this. He said hiding something like that is like trying to hold a beach ball underwater. You can do it . . . but not for long. Sooner or later, it pops back up.
So, how do we break the cycle?
Start by telling the truth—to yourself. Stop believing your own BS. Get clear about what you want, what you feel, and what you’re doing.
Once you’re honest with you, being honest with others gets a whole lot easier.
It’s a process, for sure. But once you realize your hidden agenda won’t stay hidden forever, you can start opening the door to real, unfiltered conversations. And what’s on the other side of that door? I can’t say. It’s different for everyone.
But I can promise you this: it feels lighter. Like a weight’s been lifted. You’ll breathe easier, move freer.
And just so we’re clear—this isn’t about being noble or selfless. You’re doing this for you. Because the people around you? They can already feel that something’s off. Coming clean isn’t just brave—it clears the air. For everyone.
So, I’ll leave you with this:
There’s no shame in wanting something different for your life. The harm comes when you try to wrap that desire in a neat, little box of lies.
Tell the truth. Even if your voice shakes.
All the best,
John
