Survive Until You Thrive
I saw a young guy at the gym the other day wearing a T-shirt that simply said: “Survive.”
It stuck with me. Because honestly, we all want to thrive—right? But too often, we’re full of excuses about why we’re not there yet.
Here’s the plain truth: thriving doesn’t happen without surviving first.
You’ve got to push through the setbacks. And there will be setbacks.
The folks who struggle the most are usually the ones avoiding the hard stuff. They want the rewards without the roadwork. But surviving is what leads to thriving.
If you give up at the first sign of trouble, well, you’re not going to finish the mission. You won’t thrive—you’ll stall.
Survival and stick-to-itiveness? They’re like twins. You need at least one of them to keep moving forward. If you don’t, you’re stuck—mentally, emotionally, spiritually. Playing opossum. Waiting around for something to blossom without doing the work.
First step? Pull your head out of the sand—or whatever dark place it might be—and get back in the game. Because “thrive” rhymes with “alive.” And if you want to feel truly alive, you’ve got to activate that survival instinct.
Now, if you're sitting around waiting for a magic wand to appear, I've got some bad news. That wand isn’t coming. And the longer you wait, the further away "thrive" gets. It’s like putting your dreams on life support and watching them slowly circle the drain.
That guy at the gym? He gets it. He knows there’s a survival course he has to go through to reach his goals. Meanwhile, others show up in brand-new workout gear, thinking just being there is enough. Like they’re entitled to the results—without the sweat.
Darwin said, “Survival of the fittest.” But I think it’s the other way around: You have to survive—to get fit. To get strong. To get anywhere worthwhile.
Bottom line? You have to survive . . . until you thrive.
All the best,
John
