Update Your Resumé
Ever notice that resumés don’t include the stuff we tried? You might not have put together a life summary just yet, but when you do, all those “tries” are going to end up on the cutting room floor.
If I want to annoy myself, it’s easy. If I hear someone (including me) say, “I tried that,” my skin crawls. Let’s be honest, that’s code for, “I didn’t stick with it.”
Now, I’ll give you a pass if you’re talking about trying New Tide. That one doesn’t bug me.
But for everything else? If you had actually stuck with it, you probably would’ve seen the results you wanted.
Just think about how often we say stuff like:
- “I tried to save money.”
- “I tried Weight Watchers.”
- “I tried to quit [insert your unwanted habit here].”
We’re not exactly a culture known for sticking with things. Persistence isn’t really our strong suit—and we usually end up paying for that. Then, to feel better about it, we say we tried.
Here’s a little secret: nobody really cares about your list of tries. Not even your therapist.
I’m not trying to be Yoda here, but if you're looking to actually accomplish something, you’ve got to take “I tried” off your life's resumé. It just doesn’t move the needle.
Next time you’re about to say, “I tried that,” try this instead: “I didn’t stick with it.”
It might sting a little, but saying that does two really powerful things:
- It shows you’re being honest.
- It puts the responsibility—and the power—back where it belongs: with you.
Here’s the bare naked truth: success takes effort. Not just once, not just for a weekend, but over time. We have to continually participate in our own success. If you keep ignoring that fact, plan on having a very trying existence.
All the best,
John
