Freedom Comes When Something Gives You Up

Call me crazy, but when it comes to freedom, I think we’ve got it backwards. We tend to believe that we have to give something up in order to be free of it. But in my experience, it's usually the other way around.

Take dieting, for example. You try to give up sugar, carbs, late-night snacks—whatever. And what happens? You're constantly thinking about the very thing you’re trying not to have. You haven't let go of it. You’ve just put a spotlight on it.

I’ve come to love the word “outgrowing.” Because when you outgrow something, you don’t need to let it go—it sort of lets go of you.

Think about an old photo of yourself as a kid. Take a look at what you were wearing. Now imagine trying to squeeze into that same outfit today. It doesn’t fit. Not because you made a dramatic choice to give it up—it just doesn’t fit you anymore. You’ve moved on. You’ve outgrown it.

But here’s the tricky part: we have a tendency to cling to things that no longer fit. We try to convince ourselves they still do. We argue for a belief that drains us and holds us back. It’s the relationship that keeps us stuck. We argue for our limitations.

And here’s a thought worthy of your reflection: maybe the first step to being free isn’t giving something up . . . but dropping the argument that it still fits.

So ask yourself—what are you still arguing for that’s past its expiration date? That thing you’re defending, explaining, rationalizing—it might just be the thing that's ready to give you up.

Freedom isn’t always about force. Sometimes it’s about noticing. Noticing what doesn’t fit anymore. What feels heavy. What's coming apart at the seams. In short, what you’ve outgrown.

Because once you stop trying to shove 10 pounds of shit into a 5-pound bag, it becomes apparent it doesn't fit. It's then that your life starts to open up.

So instead of giving things up, start paying focused attention to your justifications. Then don’t be too surprised how soon that something gives you up.

All the best,

John
