The Biggest Waste Of Time

I’ve come to believe that the biggest waste of time is this: focusing on a time that’s not now.

How much of your day, your week, your year—even your life—is spent thinking about some other time? I’d bet it’s the hands-down winner when it comes to what occupies your mind.

Now, that’s not to say we shouldn’t plan for the future or reflect on the past. That’s useful—when it’s occasional and intentional. But when that kind of thinking becomes your default mode, your ability to move forward starts to sink.

So, how do you spend more time in the now?

You start by noticing when your thoughts pull you into the past or future without permission. That simple awareness—just catching yourself in the act—is often enough to bring you back to the present. And the present is the only place anything actually happens.

Be an observer of your mind, not a participant. The moment you realize your mind has a mind of its own is the moment you start to see it more clearly. You are not your mind. You’re not the passenger—it’s more like your mind is a time machine, constantly running, with or without your say-so.

You, on the other hand, are grounded in the present. Your mind? Not so much. It loves to drift—into memory, fantasy, fear, or projection—and it works hard to drag you along for the ride. But every time you go with it, you step away from what’s real and delay the actions that matter most.

Wanna stop wasting time?

Start noticing when you’re time-traveling with your mind—and gently bring yourself back to now. Because following your mind? It’s an uphill climb.

All the best,

John
