Self-Investment
You’ve probably heard the phrase:"invest in yourself." It sounds empowering. But here’s something to consider . . .
What if the self you’re investing in . . . isn’t actually you?
Think about it. Most of us are deeply invested in a version of ourselves that we got comfortable with. Not on purpose—but over time.
We collected impressions. From parents, teachers, friends, culture . . . From wins, losses, praise, criticism. All that stuff settled into our minds like layers of paint. And then one day—we looked at the wall and called it a mirror.
That’s not self-awareness. That’s self-deception.
The illusion—shared globally—is this: That the person in your head . . . the one you describe and defend . . . you think it’s real.
But you are no more that mental image than the moon is made of moldy cheese.
Every time we start a sentence with,"I'm the kind of person who . . ."we're reinforcing a story—one that might not even be ours.
You are not your résumé. You are not your trauma. You're not your titles, your roles, or even your dreams.
All of that is collected experience. Not essence. Footprints in sand—not your feet.
The problem is, we act on these stories. If you believe you’re “less than,”you’ll probably shrink. If you believe you’re “more than,”you might act superior. Either way . . . that image runs the show.
One of life’s quiet missions—at least the way I see it—is this: To take that image apart. Piece by piece. Until there’s nothing left to protect.
And when that happens, what’s left isn’t nothing. It's you.
Not the label. Not the identity. But the real, living, breathing presence behind it all.
You can’t describe it. But you can feel it. And when you live from that place . . . you stop deceiving and start responding—as the authentic you.
So here’s the invitation: Take a closer look at who you think you are. And start peeling off those labels one-by-one.
Not to lose yourself . . . But to find what’s been underneath all along.
Because that? That’s the you worth investing in.
All the best,
John
