Creativity Comes From Nowhere
Remember that old Beatles song?
“He's a real nowhere man, living in his nowhere land . . . ”
Yeah. That one.
Most people hear that and think it’s about someone lost — aimless — floating through life. But I'd like to flip that interpretation on its head.
Because a “Nowhere Man” — or woman — might actually be right where the magic happens.
See, in this case, Nowhere isn’t a bad place. It's not confusion. It’s not "Loser-ville." It's somewhere outside your head.
It’s beyond the usual chatter — the noise — the overthinking. And right there . . . is where creativity lives. Nowhere Land.
We’ve all bought into this myth, right? That creativity is something you think your way into. That if you just sit and put on your thinking cap and focus hard enough . . . boom — idea!
But let me ask you:
That last creative idea you had — the good one —Where did it come from?
Did you think it into existence?
Or did it just . . . show up?
Yep, just what I suspected your answer might be . . . it came out of nowhere.
So how do we get there?
How do we reach this mysterious “Nowhere Land”?
Well, here’s the good news:
You don’t need to go live in a cave. You don’t need to find some mountaintop guru. You just need to step past the edges of your everyday thinking.
Sure, there are classic tools: Meditation. Yoga. Self-hypnosis. Progressive relaxation.
All great.
But there's another path — a sneakier one.
I call it: “Doing something with purpose.”
Let me tell you a story.
Years ago, I got a great tip from Dr. Dave Dobson — Smart guy. Knew the mind well.
He said: When you take a test, read every question first. All of them. Even the ones you don’t know the answer to.
Then go back to the beginning and start answering.
Why?
Because, while your conscious mind is solving the ones it knows . . . your other-than-conscious mind is working behind the scenes — quietly rummaging through memory for the ones you don’t.
It’s like when you’re stumped on a crossword puzzle, go make a cup of tea . . . and suddenly — bam! — the word appears.
Magic?
Not quite.
Just . . . Nowhere Land at work.
So here’s how this works in real life:
You’re stuck on a problem?
Do something else —but do it with purpose.
Take a walk. Wash the dishes. Ride your bike through the woods. Take a shower.
But before you do, set an intention.
Say:
“I dedicate this shower to unlocking my next great idea.”
Then — let it go.
Pay attention only to what you’re doing.
Feel that warm water on your body. Smell the soap. Watch the water go down the drain . . .
Be there.
Because while you’re fully immersed . . .
Your creative mind is quietly . . . weaving magic.
You see, when we try too hard to be creative — we jam the signal. It's like praying for an answer . . . and then interrupting that prayer to tell God how to deliver it.
That’s not how this works.
Creativity doesn’t need your critical thinking. In fact — it’s better off without it.
So here’s my invitation:
Get in the habit of “doing something with purpose.”
Set the intention. Let go. And let your creative mind do what it was made to do.
Because you’re not going nowhere.
You’re going to Nowhere Land . . . where the good stuff lives.
All the best,
John
