Evolving & Devolving

One day a friend asked how I was doing. Normally, I would say something like “fine” and move on like we all do.

But for some reason, I paused for a beat and this is what I said: “I’m evolving and devolving at the same time.” It wasn’t the answer either one of us was expecting, not exactly your everyday retort.

I got to wondering about that answer and found that it was descriptive of what was going on with me.

First, let’s take a closer look at both words: “Evolving” and “Devolving.”

Evolving simply means developing gradually. For example, our bodies evolve from infant to adult.

Devolving can mean declining or deteriorating, as in my agility is devolving as I age. You know . . . joints that crack, beliefs that don’t.

Evolving had me be more open-minded, more flexible in the way I saw the world. Some of those hard positions I used to take? Not so hard anymore. I’d say they’re in softer cement now—still holding shape, but open to change.

And devolving? That’s just a fact of life. For example, on the continuum of birth to death, you devolve everyday.

But the bigger message is this: We devolve quicker when we don’t evolve.

For example, if we don’t evolve our eating habits as we age and as our metabolism slows down (devolves), we’re headed for a shorter, heavier ride.

And conversations can devolve into arguments if we don’t entertain the idea of evolving on our cemented positions – You know, the ones that we believe without evidence and can get into shouting matches about.

FUN FACT: Angry people die younger than most. Now I just made that up but it seems to be accurate based on my experience. They devolve quicker and frankly get sicker sooner than the average bear.

It’s life extending if they update that habit and evolve to a more even keel. It’ll keep you from keeling over by your own doing.

Bottom Line: We can  improve our life and our lifespan by evolving, and keep devolving waiting.

All the best,

John
