Thin-Skinned
A while back, The Grasshopper offered me this: The Thinner Your Skin, The Larger Your Ego. Turns out, he was spot-on.
It seems we all hold an image of who we are. But what's not readily apparent is that it’s a false god. That image in your head? That's not you, no more than your breath is you. Both are byproducts of human existence, but they’re not us.
People who are easily offended (thin skinned) have a mental image of themselves that doesn’t match up with reality. So every time they bump up against reality, their image gets wounded.
This emotional maiming has them feel under attack, and they go into defense mode - circling the wagons getting ready for a fight. It’s a fight for an illusion. We make Don Quixote swinging at windmills, thinking they're dragons, look like he’s the poster child of sanity.
Reality will always offend you, if you don’t recognize it as reality. And frankly, it doesn’t care how you feel about it.
But if you treat it like an insult—if you see it as some kind of attack—you’re signing up for a lifelong battle– one you can’t win.
One clue that you're caught up in this image, and removed from reality, is that you use the word “fair” a lot, as in “that’s not fair.” As far as I can tell the only accurate use of "fair" is in baseball, otherwise, as The Grasshopper said years ago, “Fair is a fairy tale.”
If you find you’re defending yourself, repeatedly, day after day, year after year, stop for a second and ask, "What exactly am I defending?" You’ll discover is that it’s a made up image that has no foot in reality that you’ve been fighting forever to preserve. That’s exhausting!
So maybe, just maybe, it's time to put down your sword. Recognize that you're not the person you made up in your head. Once you begin to-own that reality, fewer things will get under your skin, and you’ll be less apt to fight to maintain your windmill of an image.
All the best,
John
