What Direction Are You Heading In?

Let me start with a quote from Captain Obvious—Captain "Obvie", if you will:"It’s a lot easier to hit a target . . . if there is one."

Think about that for a second. If you don’t know where you’re going, how are you supposed to get there?

Now, I’m not talking about planning. That’s step two. I’m suggesting you first choose a direction – look at the proverbial map. Figure out where you are now . . . and where you’d like to end up.

Because if you're just floating aimlessly on the ocean—drifting around with no destination—you're not going to reach any port. And, of course, we’ve all heard that loopy justification: “I’m a free spirit.”

When you hear that, you know that person, perhaps it's you, lacks direction or purpose. That mindset leads nowhere.

The suggestion here is simple: Pick a direction. It doesn’t have to be perfect. You can always course correct as you go. But taking some kind of action? That’s how things change. That’s how things get done.

I’m reminded of a line I heard in an old bank commercial as a kid: “Wishing won’t do it. Saving will.”

Same idea here. If you’ve got something on your wish list, don’t just float and hope. Point yourself somewhere—and go. Become the action verb in your own story.

All the best,

John
