Don’t Stand in the Way

Here’s a piece of advice I got years ago — and it’s stuck with me: If you can’t support someone’s dream, at least don’t stand in the way.

We all have different dreams. That’s just how it is. But when someone close to us dreams of something we wouldn’t pick for them, many of us are conditioned to push back. Even with good intentions.

But if you’re not going to back them, at least step aside. Because if they’re truly passionate, they’re going to plow ahead — and you might get steamrolled.

This happens a lot in families. Dad owns an electrical contracting business. Son wants to be a musician. Sparks fly — and not the kind dad can power down.

My mom had a great line about this. She used to say: “Children are only lent to you.” You don’t own them. And you definitely don’t own their dreams.

Spouses, significant others, partners, lovers, friends, family, etc. can all fall under our dream umbrella . . . until they go out and get their feet wet doing something different. This is not the "rainy day" we were saving for.

When I was a preteen, I used to fall asleep with my transistor radio, listening to the DJ play my favorite music. I knew right then — I wanted to be on the radio. Years later, I had a young family and began a new career in broadcasting. One of my aunts scoffed and said to me, “That’s not a real job. ”Well . . . it was real enough for a 30-plus year career.

Somebody’s dream may not fit into your neat little picture for him or her. And nowhere is it written that you have to like it, but if it's a burning desire for them, stand aside or you'll choke on the smoke they generate.

Even if we pretend to support someone’s dream, deep down we might fear they’ll fail. And they might. But if they don’t even try — because of your loud resistance — it's highly likely that some of that regret will fall squarely on you.

Here’s what I know for sure: I've never met anyone with true passion for something who didn’t find a way to try out what they love.

Think of Spud Webb — 5 foot 7 — winning the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in 1986 and playing 13 years in the league. Nobody expected that. But passion? Passion can dunk over doubt.

Just one last thought: Don’t stand on someone’s toes when they’re trying to rise. Because if they’re headed up . . . you’re the one who's gonna get stepped on.

All the best,

John
