Where Is Your Attention?

I think of attention as currency. And how you use it determines your fortunes in life.

Are you a spender or an investor? And I think you know I’m not talking about money here.

A spender pours most of their attention into themselves, and then wonders why no one else seems to be paying attention to them.

An investor gives attention to others. And their return on investment? Other people start paying attention to them.

If this were a Bible verse, it would read: “Give unto others and others will give unto you.”

Now think about someone you know who’s always chasing attention. What do you notice? It’s never enough. They’re like a black hole — constantly taking in, rarely giving out. And when they do give a little attention, it usually comes with strings attached.

They’re like people who give to charity only for the tax break. They have no interest in the cause, only the benefit they’ll receive.

If there’s something you want more of in life . . . start by giving it away. Freely. No scoreboard, no expectations. Just give — because it feels right. And don’t be too shocked when you start getting a return on that investment . . . from the most unexpected places.

Final thought: Pay attention to where your attention goes. Because like the old joke says: “Save string while you’re young — and when you’re old, you’ll have a ball.”

All the best,

John
