Sins Of The Father
You’ve probably heard the phrase “Sins of the father.”
It’s a biblical idea — the notion that children end up carrying the consequences of their parents’ mistakes, even though they had nothing to do with them.
Sounds unfair, right?
Yeah . . . it is. But it still happens. All the time.
And I’m not just talking about debts or bad decisions. I’m talking about something deeper — the prejudices that get quietly handed down from one generation to the next. Not through lectures, but through subtle comments, offhanded remarks, body language — the stuff kids soak up without even realizing.
It’s the classic case of: Monkey see, monkey do.
Now, this hand-me-down bias may be part of life . . .
But here’s the good news: It doesn’t have to become your life.
The off ramp is to first notice that many of your beliefs are the beliefs of generations that preceded you. You just inherited them. You didn’t write the will, but you will act out their way . . . until you outgrow it.
Outgrowing means to recognize a belief that’s not working for you and update your behavior. This action reflects who you choose to be, so as not to remain a child of destiny.
Here’s the hopeful part. This practice seems to get updated with each new generation. For example, your grandparents? Probably more rigid than your parents. Your parents? A bit more set in their ways than you. And you? Hopefully more open than they were — especially if you’ve got kids of your own.
Little by little, the cycle starts to break.
It’s a fact worth noticing: The sins of the father are not yours.
Once you recognize that, you have a choice: to go forward with what didn’t work in the past, or blaze a new trail that breaks you out of an inherited jail.
Final thought: It’s truly a sin not to outgrow the prejudices of your kin.
All the best,
John
