Life Is Not A Mood Ring
Remember mood rings? Those ‘70s gems that supposedly read your emotions based on finger heat?
Yeah, turns out, they were just overpriced thermometers.
But hey, it was the '70s. Disco was big. Mistakes were made.
But we still fall for the same tricks. They just have better packaging these days. A flashy new guru, a “miracle” supplement, a feel-good philosophy that sounds deep but says nothing. It’s all modern-day mood ring material.
I saw a little daytime TV in a doctor’s waiting room one day. The popular hosts were peppy, filled with manufactured energy and smarmy smiles, and the sets were bright. But my brain started leaking out of my ears after a couple minutes of this pap. It was like eating a bag of marshmallows: sweet, soft, and zero substance.
We’ve been conditioned to treat “popular” like it means “important.” Spoiler alert: it doesn’t. Cotton candy is popular too — you just can’t live on it.
Let’s be real. Popular is a distraction. It helps us escape from life’s realities that need our attention. And no, escaping into the latest trend won’t make your problems disappear. They’ll continue to pile up like ignored laundry that grows to the size of a mountain you don't want to climb.
So here’s an unsexy but effective reminder: do your life’s laundry daily. You’ll feel better, think clearer, and still have time for that TV show. But it’s now a choice, not a distraction.
But wait, there’s more: As an added bonus, you won’t need a mood ring to tell you how you feel.
