Accepting Happiness
You know, I heard something a while back that really stuck with me: “Don’t envy what someone has — emulate it.” In other words, if someone else is happy, don’t sit there stewing in jealousy. Be happy for them. Because let’s be honest — happiness doesn’t show up every day. So the sooner you feel it for someone else, the sooner you issue an invitation for it to visit you.
Think of it like this: anytime you spot happiness — whether it’s in a friend, a stranger, or even a rival — celebrate it. Yeah, I get it, that’s not so easy when your team just lost the Super Bowl and the other side is losing their sh . . their minds in celebration. But here’s the thing — the moment you allow in a little happiness for them, you make room for your own sadness to start fading.
You can’t hold on to sadness and expect to feel joy at the same time. They can’t share the same space.
So back to that word: emulate. Who are the happiest people you know? Probably the ones who expect to be happy. It’s not that their lives are perfect — it’s that they’ve opened themselves up to happiness. It’s a mindset. And that mindset? It pays off.
Try this on for size: “Expect to be happy.” That fits neatly on a bumper sticker — and it turns out, it’s a pretty reliable way to live. But here’s the catch: “Expect to be sad” is just as powerful . . . and not in a good way.
Bottom line? Somebody else’s happiness isn’t the reason you feel sad. But resenting their happiness? That will keep you unhappy.
So do this instead: when you see happiness, anywhere — celebrate it. Make a habit of noticing it, appreciating it, and letting it in. Don’t limit the ways happiness can show up in your life. Because if you’re waiting for the exact circumstances to feel that joy, you might be waiting a long time . . . like for your team finally make it back to the Super Bowl. Unless, of course, you're the Tom Brady led New England Patriots. But I digress.
Fact: Happiness is all around. The question is — are you willing to let it in?
All the best,
John
