Doing Good = Feeling Good
I watched the funeral of a well-known young man some years back. He was only 46 when he passed—but what really struck me was how people talked about him. Friends, family, co-workers, even people who barely knew him—different stories, same message: this was a good man who did good things.
And not just in big, heroic ways, though he had plenty of those moments too. No, it was in the simple ways—how he made people feel seen, heard, appreciated. A husband, a dad, a soldier, a friend . . . no matter the role, he showed up. Fully.
I didn’t know him personally, but I sure wish I had.
Now, I don’t cry easily, but this service? Had me wiping my eyes more than once. What got to me wasn’t just the sadness—it was the beauty of how he lived. He seemed to understand something a lot of us are still trying to figure out: that doing good leads to feeling good.
Not complicated. Just true.He didn’t wait for the right time to enjoy life—he just lived it. Every day. With his whole heart.
That really stuck with me. We don’t know how long we get here, but we do get to choose how we spend the time we have.
And this guy left us with something kind of amazing. A simple formula: Want to feel good? Do good.
Now I know “good” is one of those vague words, but let’s be honest—we know what it means when we feel it. We know when we’ve done something kind or helpful or right. And that feeling? That quiet pride? That’s the reward.
So if you want more of that . . . you know what to do.
Do good. Feel good. Rinse and Repeat.
All the best,
John
