How To Unwind

I'm curious: how do you unwind? Is it with a glass of wine? A warm shower? Maybe a good chat with a friend or your spouse? Some people nap, others read, meditate, take a walk—or go for a jog.

Whatever your method, most of us are looking for the same thing: a way to quiet the mind. Because let’s face it—our thoughts can tie us up in knots.

When you talk to someone, you're getting those thoughts out. They’re no longer spinning around inside your head. And even if the person listening doesn’t have a solution for you, sometimes just speaking out loud can start to loosen the grip.

Now, talking to yourself about your own thoughts? Different story. That often just tightens the knot. And sure, a glass of wine might slow everything down—but sometimes one glass leads to another, and then another, and then you’re not relaxing so much as numbing out.

But there are more productive ways to unwind. And some of the best ones don’t cost a dime.

Give this a go: next time you’re feeling tangled up, close your eyes and do a little body scan, an inventory of your body, so to speak. Start at your toes and work your way up to the top of your head—or go the other way, whatever feels right. Just check in with each part of your body, and noticing how it feels. Notice the sensations going on in each body part.

You might even try keeping your eyes gently down and to the right—it helps some folks focus more on physical sensations rather than mental chatter. And if you would like some help getting started with this method, just search for my "How To Relax" recording on this channel. It's FREE!

What this technique does is shift your attention out of your head and into your body. And when your body starts to relax, your mind follows. Spaces start showing up between your thoughts. You breathe easier.

And just like that—you start to unwind.

All the best,

John
