The Lesson Of The Ant
I was taught an old lesson years ago—by an ant, of all things.
I was sitting on my front steps eating an apple, when I noticed this ant making its way toward me. Without thinking much of it, I just flicked it away with my fingers. It landed a step below . . . and it just kept going. No drama. No hesitation. It simply picked up from where it landed and kept moving forward.
And that’s the lesson the ant taught me: Start from where you are.
How often do we get flicked by life—by disappointment, a job loss, a breakup—and try to pick up from where we were instead of where we’ve landed?
That’s a mistake. Because trying to start from a spot you’re no longer in . . . will keep your goal forever on the horizon . . . always out of reach.
I was talking with someone recently who kept saying, “I’m working really hard.” And I don’t doubt that they are. But hard work, on its own, doesn’t guarantee results—especially if you're working hard in the wrong place, or on the wrong thing.
In their case, it seemed they were trying to start from where they used to be. But no amount of effort will make that your current location.
That takes me back to a story I’ve shared more than a few times: years ago, I was out of work and finally got a job offer in broadcasting. The only catch? The pay was less than what I made at my last job. I was complaining to my friend Paul about it, and he just said, “It’s more than you’re making now.”
There it was —the lesson of the ant.
We don’t get to resume from the past. We have to begin from now.
So . . . where have you landed?
That’s your true starting point. And when you start from there, instead of fighting reality, you’ll finally get some traction.
I’m grateful that ant showed up to my little porch picnic. His geography lesson still holds up: start from where you are, not where you wish you were.
All the best,
John
