Spidey Sense
Some years back, I spent over three hours watching a presidential debate that felt . . . well, anything but presidential. And honestly, it wasn’t really the candidates’ fault.
The network set it up less like a debate and more like a reality show cage match. Instead of helping us understand the candidates’ positions, they seemed more interested in stirring the pot—setting the stage for conflict, not clarity.
Sure, differences will naturally come out during a debate. But framing it like an MMA bout just drags our politics deeper down the rabbit hole—and leaves us even more in the dark.
Now, even with all that manufactured drama, I didn’t take the bait.
Why? Because I tune into candidates a little differently. I don’t start by sizing up their positions, or how polished they are, or how well they stick to the facts. That stuff comes later. First, I just try to get a feel for the person.
And this goes way beyond politics.
People are always telling you who they are—if you pay attention to how you feel in your body when you're watching them. No words needed. No body language expertise necessary.
Here's a little experiment: Record any unscripted moment—something on TV, YouTube, TikTok, wherever. It could be British Parliament on C-SPAN or an episode of Judge Judy. Watch it with the sound off. Don’t focus on what’s being said—just notice the feeling, in your body, you get from each person.
Then rewind and watch again with the sound on. You might be surprised how accurate your initial impression was.
I call that your “Spidey Sense.”
It’s not about judging a book by its cover. It’s about tuning in to the stuff people communicate without saying a word. And that kind of gut sense is often way more reliable than whatever spin comes out of their mouth.
Thing is, media knows you’ll get pulled in by the sideshows. That’s why they build them in. It’s great for ratings, not so great for understanding. All the noise keeps you from seeing—or feeling—what’s really going on, even with people you already agree with.
So here’s my invitation: Next time, try listening less with your ears and more with your body. You might just discover your own inner Peter Parker.
All the best,
John
