Simplification Made Simple

Life gets simpler when you simplify. Obvious? Sure. But true.

We often take the long, complicated way to what we want—maybe because we don’t know any better, we’re stubborn, or we just overthink things.

The shortcut? Learn from people who’ve already got what you want. Their satisfaction quotient is usually higher; their lives less cluttered. Follow their lead—and do your version of it. That’s real simplification.

Trying to figure it all out all on your own can take a lifetime. That’s not noble—that’s stupid. The trail’s already been blazed. Walk it.

There’s a principle called Occam’s Razor: Its premise? the best solution is usually the simplest. Ignore the assumptions being sold to you and get sold on what’s already working.

A simpler life isn’t about having everything in place before you can be happy or satisfied. It’s about celebrating small wins and being grateful for what’s here now—things the striver often overlooks.

Here’s a trick: keep asking yourself, “What will that get you?” until you hit the real answer. For example, if you say, “I want a big house with acres of land,” you ask, “What will that get you?” You may answer, “The house I’ve wanted all my life.” Again, you ask, “What will that get you?” This back and forth can go on for a while until you drill down for a deeper answer that addresses what you really want. It’s usually some form of peace of mind or a feeling of more comfort in your own skin—not the car, the house, or the acres of land. So why not go straight for the feeling instead of stacking up conditions?

By all means, chase your dreams. Just don’t buy someone else’s version of peace and happiness. And if you find yourself always striving but never arriving, it may be time to take the shortcut—appreciating what you already have.

It’s a more peaceful life with a lot less strife.

All the best,

John
