Artificial Intelligence
If you’ve not been inundated with information about artificial intelligence, you’re either a hermit monk or someone who lives in a Faraday zone.
Artificial Intelligence or “AI” as it’s commonly called is the rage. And if newspapers were still a thing, it would constantly be on the front page.
I don’t know much about AI, only what I read or hear online. But the overarching message of fear that I hear, is it’s going to take over the world.
The other side of that message is that it’s going to improve the quality of our lives.
I don’t know if either one of those predictions will come to pass, but my mind goes to a different place.
It focuses on the word “artificial.”
That word goes against the slogan for Coca-Cola®: “It’s the real thing.”
I think of AI as a giant storehouse of formulas or recipes. It can compare and contrast known information at lightning speed. It certainly can compute faster than you or me, but not deeper.
Think of Einstein and his Theory of Relativity. Let’s call that a formula.
AI takes known formulas and juxtaposes them nine ways from Sunday and arrives at some conclusion. But it can’t come up with an original formula, only a derivative.
I was recently introduced to the work of Pianist Stephen Ridley, one interesting dude. He told a story of playing a private concert for a mover and shaker in the world of AI. This man’s wife and children all played piano, and rather well. During his private performance he was asked if this guy’s wife and children could also play. Ridley readily agreed. The older, adult children went first until it was the youngest one’s turn. She was turning cartwheels in the room and not giving much attention to the performances. When it was her turn, her kinetic energy went away and she sat at the piano and played a somber piece of music that made her father cry.
After the concert was over Stephen Ridley and this AI mogul got into a discussion about Artificial Intelligence. This titan of industry said that AI could replicate his young daughter’s performance to a tee. Upon hearing this, Ridley asked, “but would it make you cry?”
Something real went into that child’s performance and aping it to the letter somehow feels artificial. We sense the difference.
It reminded me of my first visit to Disney World. We went on a family vacation. It was spectacular. The atmosphere was pristine and everything was magical and beautiful. But after the third day, I got this empty sense about my surroundings. They were artificial and it registered with me on day three.
Art forgery is a thing. Some talented person or AI machine can create an astonishing replica, but it won’t contain the energy that went into the original, and that somehow can be sensed.
That brings me to this conclusion. I believe our mission in life is to create. We’re all creative in different ways, and that creativity can’t be replicated. It’s like fingerprints, they’re all different.
It seems to me that AI can only imitate, not duplicate. I find it’s quite a useful tool that can polish the edges of our creative ideas and make them sparkle, but as the main act, creativity it does lack.
All the best,
John
